If In Doubt Sit Them Out

Rugby is a contact sport enjoyed by thousands of players throughout Scotland, who all enjoy the physical, mental and emotional benefits that participation in the game brings.

McLaren RFC places player welfare at the forefront of all that we do and have a team of first aiders to support training and games.

Any player with a suspected head knock or concussion should be immediately removed from play in a safe manner: ‘If in doubt, sit them out’.

  • They must not return to activity that day
  • If a neck injury is suspected, players should be removed under the direction of a healthcare professional
  • In all cases of suspected concussion it is recommended that medical advice is sought early. These may include the player’s GP or NHS24 (dial 111)

Following a suspected concussions ensure that the following steps are taken:

  • The player isn’t left alone (for the initial 1-2 hours at least)
  • The player begins immediate rest
  • The injury is communicated to parents/guardians, teachers, employers etc to ensure that appropriate steps are taken

Protective equipment

Rugby headguards do not protect against concussion. They do protect against superficial injuries to the head such as cuts and grazes - this has been demonstrated in a number of research studies.

There is some evidence to suggest that head guards may increase risk taking behaviours in some players.

Mouthguards/gum shields do not protect against concussion either although they are strongly recommended for all players as they do protect against dental and facial injuries. All McLaren RFC players playing contact rugby in matches and training must wear gum shields.
